Overview
An endoscopic discectomy (ED) removes herniated disc material in the spine. This minimally invasive approach is one of the least traumatic surgical options for spinal disc herniation. The surgeon inserts a tubular retractor through a small incision, gently moving surrounding muscle aside. A camera provides visualisation while X-ray fluoroscopy guides the removal of affected disc material with a grasper. The procedure takes approximately 30 minutes and most patients return home within two to three hours.
Benefits
- Minimal blood loss
- Outpatient procedure with no hospitalisation
- Minimal scar tissue from smaller incisions
- Short recovery period and high success rate
- Spinal mobility preservation
- Performed under local anaesthesia with no external stitches
When it May Not Be Suitable
- Rare cases of nerve damage or persisting pain (risk significantly lower than open surgery)
Recovery Timeline
Same day
Most patients are mobilised within hours and discharged the same day or after a short observation.
First week
Light walking is encouraged; avoid heavy lifting and prolonged bending. Pain is typically mild and managed with simple medication.
2–4 weeks
Gradual return to desk work and daily routines. Posture and gentle activity are guided at follow-up.
6 weeks onward
Most normal activities resume; a structured strengthening programme supports long-term spine health.
Minimally Invasive vs Open Surgery
| Factor | Minimally Invasive | Open Surgery |
|---|---|---|
| Incision size | Small (often 8mm–2cm) | Large |
| Muscle damage | Minimal — muscles separated | More — muscles cut |
| Blood loss | Low | Higher |
| Post-op pain | Less | More |
| Hospital stay | Short (day-care to 1–2 days) | Longer |
| Scarring | Minimal | More visible |
| Return to activity | Faster | Slower |
| Infection risk | Lower | Higher |

Frequently Asked Questions
- Most patients go home within 2–3 hours and return to light activities within a few days. The 8mm incision and muscle-sparing approach mean far less pain than open surgery.
- It is one of the least invasive spine procedures, performed under local anaesthesia with continuous imaging. Risks are significantly lower than traditional open surgery.
