Overview
Disc replacement surgery involves removal of the diseased disc tissue and implantation of an artificial disc implant. Cervical and lumbar disc replacement devices are designed to maintain natural spinal movement while securing to the vertebral bones. Total disc replacement is a newer approach compared to traditional fusion surgeries and is gaining acceptance as long-term studies demonstrate effectiveness; cervical procedures are currently more common than lumbar replacements.
