Overview
Spinal injections are a medical procedure used for both diagnosis and treatment of back, neck, arm or leg pain. They are performed with image guidance (fluoroscopy) as outpatient procedures, typically lasting around 30 minutes, and represent a less invasive alternative to surgical intervention. Each injection type reduces swelling and pressure on the nerves surrounding the spine, providing rapid symptom relief while also helping to identify pain sources.
The Procedure
- 1Facet joint injections — administered directly into joints at the back of the spine
- 2Epidural injections — delivered into the spinal canal
- 3Selective nerve root blocks — injections around the nerve root
- 4Discograms — injected inside the disc
Benefits
- Reduce swelling and pressure on nerves
- Provide rapid symptom improvement
- Serve a diagnostic purpose to identify pain sources
- Less intense and less invasive than spinal surgery
