Overview
The spinal cord is a bundle of nerves that runs down the centre of the back and connects the brain to the rest of the body. A spinal cord injury occurs when there is damage to the spinal cord that results in loss of function, such as mobility and sensation. There are various causes including trauma, disease and degeneration. Treatment often involves surgery to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and stabilise the spine.
Causes
- Trauma (accidents, falls, sports injuries)
- Disease
- Degeneration
Treatment Options
Decompression Surgery
Removes bone or tissue pressing on the spinal cord to alleviate pain and enhance movement.
Spinal Fusion Surgery
Joins two or more vertebrae to stabilise the spine and prevent additional damage.
Artificial Disc Replacement
Substitutes a damaged disc with a prosthetic one to reduce discomfort and restore mobility.
Spinal Cord Stimulation
Implants a device delivering electrical signals to manage pain and restore function.
Regenerative Medicine
Uses stem cells and regenerative therapies to repair damaged spinal cord tissue.
