Overview
Osteoarthritis, commonly known as degenerative joint disease, is a chronic condition affecting the joints and causing pain and stiffness. In the spine it causes chronic pain and restricted movement. There is no cure for osteoarthritis in the spine, but management options exist to improve quality of life.
Symptoms
- Neck or lower back pain
- Spinal stiffness, especially in the mornings or after inactivity
- Limited spinal range of motion
- Arm or leg numbness or tingling
- Arm or leg weakness
Causes
- Cartilage breakdown over time with ageing
- Bone spur formation
- Obesity
- Previous spinal injuries
- Genetic factors
Diagnosis

- Imaging studies such as X-rays or MRI scans
Treatment Options
