Overview
A broken neck or back — a cervical or lumbar fracture — can be a devastating injury that damages the spinal cord. The spine contains 33 vertebrae that provide structural support and protect the spinal cord. Fractures may produce symptoms ranging from pain to paralysis and require prompt specialist assessment.
Symptoms

Causes
- Trauma — vehicular accidents, falls and sports injuries
- Osteoporosis — fractures with minimal trauma
- Cancer — spinal tumours weakening bone
- Infection — spinal infections weakening bone
