Overview
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory condition primarily affecting the spine. It causes pain, stiffness, and inflammation in the joints between the vertebrae, leading to a stiff and immobile spine. The condition typically progresses from the lower back upward to the upper back, neck, and potentially other joints. Spine surgery serves as a treatment option for severe AS cases, with the primary goals of improving mobility and function, alleviating pain, and preventing additional spinal damage.
Treatment Options
Decompression Surgery
Removes vertebral portions causing compression to relieve pressure on the spinal cord or nerves in severe spinal stenosis.
Spinal Fusion Surgery
Uses metal plates, screws or rods to stabilise the spine and prevent further deterioration in severe deformities.
Disc Replacement Surgery
Replaces damaged discs causing severe pain and inflammation with artificial alternatives.
Osteotomy
Cuts and realigns vertebrae to improve alignment and function in severe deformities unsuitable for fusion.
Laminectomy
Removes the lamina at the back of the vertebra to relieve pressure from stenosis or herniated discs.
